Up in lovely Burnaby, British Columbia, some of the best hockey gamers around are in town to visit the Electronic Arts studio and spend some time with NHL 10, the latest iteration of the standout hockey title.

As one of the finest sporting games available - I consider the NHL series the second-best in the biz behind Sony’s MLB: The Show, and it’s closing quickly - it will be fascinating to read about what’s coming down the pike for hockey fans.

NHL 09 really cemented the series’ responsive gameplay engine, which allows for fast, furious and fun play without sacrificing realism and strategy. The game’s online suite provided plenty of highlights, specifically the create-a-player/team functionality that ended up as probably the most enjoyable mode of its kind, anywhere.

Now, with NHL 10, the developers have an unenviable task: how to make the game better and fresh without damaging what works so well already. Stagnation isn’t an option, but when you have a game this good, sometimes it’s hard to figure out where to go from up.

On the Inside EA Sports blog, NHL 10 producer (and former NHL goaltender) David Littman has released two videos that serve as a primer for the Community Event, which can be found below:

I’ve been to EA Community events with the gamers listed below, and believe me, they’re a terrific group. For news coming from this year’s NHL 10 Community Event, be sure to check out some of the following sites:

  • CrashTheNet.ca - The home of hockey whiz Luc Wolfe, who beat me in the NHL tournament final held in Burnaby last year. Badly.
  • GamertagRadio.com - Mandy Paez stepped into the ring with pro boxer Sergio Mora at the recent Fight Night Community event. She’s more than tough enough for the NHL.
  • EASportsfans.com - Damon Peterson’s a jack of all trades when it comes to sports games… and he’s a much better skater than he lets on.
  • Fans.NHL.com/laur - Lauren Belfoy really knows her hockey - especially her beloved Maple Leafs - and even starred in a commercial for last year’s game.
  • StickSkills.net - Dougie Veney’s enthusiasm is infectious; he loves hockey… and telling you about his latest “sick” dunk on the basketball court.
  • Snapshot-Hockey.net - Gordon Murphy’s a serious sim gamer; the game’s developers can expect more than few questions about increasing in-game realism.
  • Xbox-Sports.com - Robert Hagen’s a sports-gamer’s gamer; you name it, he’ll play you in it.
