Musings for a Thursday afternoon…

  • I love Will Wright’s work. I want to get that out front. But everything I’ve seen about Spore seems like a giant tech demo. There’s nothing wrong with it in concept, I suppose - building alien life forms from the DNA level surely sounds interesting - but I have no idea who the audience is, who’s going to rush out and buy it. Plus, it’s spent so long in development that the game itself seems almost ephemeral. Nevertheless, Electronic Arts says it’s now coming in September… to the iPhone. The iPhone already needs its users to carry around all but a small nuclear plant in their pocket to get it through the day; so I’m looking forward to seeing how it’ll compete with the Nintendo DS and PSP. I’m not sure doctors Crick and Watson would have had such luck working in only 30-minute chunks of time…
  • Did you bet on the wrong horse? Did you fall in love with HD-DVD only to find the rug unceremoniously pulled out from under you? Well, if you bought your HD-DVD player at Circuit City, you might be in luck. According to Gizmodo, the electronics giant will accept your HD-DVD player in return for a credit towards a Blu-ray player, even if the return window has expired. Corporate goodwill usually doesn’t last long, so if you stand to take advantage of this, stop reading immediately and get back to your local Circuit City. I understand… we’ll be here when you get back.
  • Women have grown to 38 percent of the gaming populace, a good sign by any measure. CNN takes a moment to explain how women are beginning to get out from in front of the screens and start getting behind them in larger numbers. The first order of business: hopefully putting an end to Dead or Alive: Even More Ludicrous Dimensions.
  • Um… the Dropkick Murphys… for St. Patrick’s Day… three-song pack… for free? Yes, please - thank you, Activision. I’m actually going to put Rock Band down and get back to Guitar Hero III for this one.

With regard to HD-DVD vs BluRay, neither matters to me. In fact I have still yet to watch a HD movie. I side with Microsoft in their decision because the eventual winner will be digital downloads. Netflix supposedly is in talks with both Sony and Microsoft.

The only thing holding this medium delivery back are DRM issues, pricing and download speeds. Once all the companies are on the same page I predict DD will take off.

    just my 2 cents.
