MLB 08: The Show - Interview with Ryan HowardShawn Drotar

Posted on February 29th, 2008 in Gaming, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, News, Opinion, PSP by Shawn Drotar

Philadelphia Phillies slugging first baseman Ryan Howard has been racking up the accolades in his brief but impressive career, and the big man with the home-run swing now finds himself on the cover of MLB 08: The Show, the startlingly realistic simulation baseball title for the PlayStation 3.

Since MLB 08: The Show will be on store shelves by Tuesday, March 4, 5WG had a chance to catch up with Howard while he was in San Diego, spending some time with the game’s development team and showing off the motion capture process that makes the game’s animations so lifelike.

Since Ryan wears jersey No. 6 on the Phillies, I figured it made sense to ask him six questions about the game, the process of making it, and how he feels about becoming the latest face of the franchise.

Howard’s answers to the questions are embedded in video form below:

Shawn Drotar, 5WG: When an athlete is on the cover of a video game, it’s a strong statement of approval. What makes MLB 08: The Show special and worthy of your endorsement?

5WG: Does MLB 08: The Show accurately depict a real-life baseball player’s thought process at the plate and in the field? If so, how?

5WG: What has impressed you the most about the game?

5WG: Is video-gaming a part of life in the clubhouse or on the road? What’s popular with your teammates besides The Show?

5WG: Did you enjoy the motion-capture experience and meeting with the development team?

5WG: What could you tell us about the developers’ understanding of the game of baseball, and what did you share with them for the game?

Ryan’s usually at the plate, but now as a pitchman for The Show, he has just one request for gamers next week:

MLB 08: The Show will be released on March 4 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and PSP systems.

Great interview Shawn!!! Being new to The Show series, I am totally blown away by the game itself, the involvement of the development team with the end users, the gaming community’s passion for the game and how it all comes together like a big happy family…..very impressive!!! I can’t wait to play the game offline and online….

Excellent interview 5W-G….Great approach to it. Howard seems like a great guy and the model spokesman. Once again, this game sounds incredible.

[…] Fortunately for baseball video-gamers, Opening Day seemed to come a bit early this year with the release of MLB 08: The Show. The superlative title (with the engaging cover athlete) is probably the best current sports title on the market today, but like all games, it could always be better. […]
